Youth Work Handbook - Ratios

Adult to Children Ratios

The legislation has set out recommended ratios for work with under eights.  From this best practice guidance we would suggest the following ratios for working with over eights.

Indoor Activities
    Age

0-2    1:3
2-3    1:4
3-8    1:8
8 +    2 adults for every twenty children (one male, one female) plus 1 additional adult for every ten children

Outdoor activities
    Age

0-2    1:3
2-3    1:4
3-8    1:8
8-13    2 adults for every fifteen children (one male, one female) plus 1 additional adult for every eight children
13+    2 adults for every twenty young people (one male, one female) plus 1 additional adult for every ten young people

At no time should one adult be alone with a group of children.  There should always be at least two adults with the group.

Please remember these are recommended ratios.  Your activity or trip may require closer supervision depending upon its nature.
