Volunteer Update 4

Update 4 to Volunteers – 9th April 2020

Most (not all) volunteers are now ‘on active duty’. Sometimes a call up has depended on where you live, as we have tried to match volunteers and those requiring help on a geographical basis. We are still getting requests for help with shopping, so if you have not yet had a call, your turn may well come soon.

There has been a reminder to all volunteer groups undertaking shopping on behalf of others, that ‘a once a week’ shop for people should be our aim. As ever, wherever possible please try to shop locally in support of our own business community. We do want to support them as much as we can in the current difficult trading times. Please see the latest Brock Business Sheet attached (version 5) which gives details of opening hours and services available.

Thank you to those who have offered to help out with taking people to medical appointments – a task normally undertaken by Brockenhurst Care Cars. This wonderful organisation has had to fold temporarily because the vast majority of its drivers were over 70. Of course, in the current situation many appointments have been postponed anyway, and some of our elderly do not wish to attend clinics at the moment, so demand for Care Cars has diminished. If you wish to volunteer to drive (you will need to have either an enhanced DBS in place or to have been accepted on the GoodSam NHS programme as a driver), please phone Care Cars on 08456 435808 and leave a message saying your name and number and that you are volunteering to drive. Someone will return your call.

It is looking very likely that the current ‘lockdown’ is set to continue for some time yet. It is remarkable just how resilient our older folks are. In the face of solitary isolation, which many of them are having to endure, they are grateful for any outside contact and for ‘news’ from around the village. So many speak of the kindness of strangers. They have been touched by people going out of their way to enable them still to feel part of the community. So well done those of you who are going ‘above and beyond’! This week the Covid-19 group here in the village arranged for our Care Home residents to be sent letters and drawings produced by the children. They have, by all accounts, been much enjoyed by those residents.
