Evening Prayer Friday, 22nd May

 EVENING PRAYER Friday, 22nd May

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

All: O Lord, make haste to help us.

Send your Holy Spirit upon us,

All: and clothe us with power from on high. Alleluia.

1.      Bless the Lord, O my soul.
O Lord my God, how excellent is your greatness!

2.      You are clothed with majesty and honour, wrapped in light as in a garment.

3.      The sun knows the time for its setting. You make darkness that it may be night.

4.      O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all;

5.      the earth is full of your creatures.

6.      When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

7.      May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; may the Lord rejoice in his works;

8.      I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will make music to my God while I have my being.

Psalm 104.1,2,21b,22a,26,32,33,35

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us
to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

All: Amen.

The Word of God

Evening Psalm - Psalm 145

I will extol you, my God and King,
    and bless your name for ever and ever.
Every day I will bless you,
    and praise your name for ever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
    his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall laud your works to another,
    and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendour of your majesty,
    and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
The might of your awesome deeds shall be
  proclaimed,
   and I will declare your greatness.
They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant
  goodness, and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

The Lord is gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
    and his compassion is over all that he has made.

10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
   and all your faithful shall bless you.
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,
   and tell of your power,

12 to make known to all people your mighty deeds,

   and the glorious splendour of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
  and your dominion endures throughout all

generations.

  The Lord is faithful in all his words,
    and gracious in all his deeds.
14 The Lord upholds all who are falling,

  and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,

    and you give them their food in due season.
16 You open your hand,
   satisfying the desire of every living thing.

17 The Lord is just in all his ways,
   and kind in all his doings.

18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,

 to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfils the desire of all who fear him;

   he also hears their cry, and saves them.
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,

 but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
   and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Canticle

All: The Spirit of the Father,
who raised Christ Jesus from the dead, gives life to the people of God. Alleluia.

1.   The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death.

2.   All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God; for we have received the Spirit that enables us to cry,  ‘Abba, Father’.

3.   The Spirit himself bears witness that we are children of God and if God’s children, then heirs of God;

4.   If heirs of God, then fellow-heirs with Christ; since we suffer with him now,

5.   that we may be glorified with him.

6.   These sufferings that we now endure are not worth comparing to the glory that shall be revealed.

7.   For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God.

Romans 8.2,14,15b-19

All: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

All: The Spirit of the Father,
who raised Christ Jesus from the dead, gives life to the people of God. Alleluia.

Scripture: Galatians 5.13–end

13 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. 14 For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ 15 If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.

16 Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh 17 For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God

22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control There is no law against such things 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.

Following the reading, Silence is kept.

When you send forth your Spirit, we are created;

you renew the face of the earth.

All:When you send forth your Spirit, we are created; you renew the face of the earth.

O Lord, how manifold are your works;

in wisdom you have made them all.

All: You renew the face of the earth.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit.

All: When you send forth your Spirit, we are created; you renew the face of the earth.

From Psalm 104

Gospel Canticle

The Magnificat (The Song of Mary)

All: How excellent is your name in all the world,
you have set your glory above the heavens. Alleluia.

1.   My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour; he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.

2.   From this day all generations will call me blessed; the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his name.

3.   He has mercy on those who fear him, from generation to generation.

4.   He has shown strength with his arm
and has scattered the proud in their conceit,

5.   Casting down the mighty from their thrones and lifting up the lowly.

6.   He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.

7.   He has come to the aid of his servant Israel, to remember his promise of mercy,

8.   The promise made to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children for ever.

Luke 1.46-55

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

All: How excellent is your name in all the world,
you have set your glory above the heavens. Alleluia.

Prayers

Pray for God to be known where people are educated:

    That all young people may know the hope of the Christian story;

    That the staff may be inspired by the way God would have us live;

    That the Holy Spirit would be present, guiding them daily and supporting them in times of challenge ;

    That the local Church communities will be strengthened to take God’s message into these places.

When the leader says, “Lord, hear us.”, please respond:

All Lord, graciously hear us.

Collect

O God the King of glory,
you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ
with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven:
we beseech you, leave us not comfortless,
but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us
and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All: Amen.

The Lords Prayer is said

Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

The Conclusion

May the Spirit kindle in us the fire of God’s love.

All: Amen.

Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia.

All: Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.
