Evening Prayer Friday 29th May

EVENING PRAYER Friday 29th May

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.

All: O Lord, make haste to help us.

Send your Holy Spirit upon us,

All: and clothe us with power from on high. Alleluia.

1.      Bless the Lord, O my soul.
O Lord my God, how excellent is your greatness!

2.      You are clothed with majesty and honour, wrapped in light as in a garment.

3.      The sun knows the time for its setting. You make darkness that it may be night.

4.      O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all;

5.      the earth is full of your creatures.

6.      When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

7.      May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; may the Lord rejoice in his works;

8.      I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will make music to my God while I have my being.

Psalm 104.1,2,21b,22a,26,32,33,35

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

That this evening may be holy, good and peaceful, let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God, so may your mercy come down upon us
to cleanse our hearts and set us free to sing your praise now and for ever.

All: Amen.

The Word of God

Psalm 147

Praise the Lord!
 How good it is to sing praises to our God;
    for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
     he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the broken-hearted,
    and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars;
    he gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
    his understanding is beyond measure.
The Lord lifts up the downtrodden;
    he casts the wicked to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    make melody to our God on the lyre.
He covers the heavens with clouds,
    prepares rain for the earth,
    makes grass grow on the hills.
He gives to the animals their food,
    and to the young ravens when they cry.
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
     nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner;
11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
     in those who hope in his steadfast love.

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
     Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For he strengthens the bars of your gates;
     he blesses your children within you.
14 He grants peace within your borders;
     he fills you with the finest of wheat.
15 He sends out his command to the earth;
     his word runs swiftly.
16 He gives snow like wool;
     he scatters frost like ashes.
17 He hurls down hail like crumbs—

    who can stand before his cold?
18 He sends out his word, and melts them;
     he makes his wind blow, and the waters flow.
19 He declares his word to Jacob,
     his statutes and ordinances to Israel.
20 He has not dealt thus with any other nation;
     they do not know his ordinances.
   Praise the Lord!

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Canticle

All: The Spirit of the Father,
who raised Christ Jesus from the dead, gives life to the people of God. Alleluia.

1.   The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death.

2.   All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God; for we have received the Spirit that enables us to cry,  ‘Abba, Father’.

3.   The Spirit himself bears witness that we are children of God and if God’s children, then heirs of God;

4.   If heirs of God, then fellow-heirs with Christ; since we suffer with him now,

5.   that we may be glorified with him.

6.   These sufferings that we now endure are not worth comparing to the glory that shall be revealed.

7.   For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God.

Romans 8.2,14,15b-19

All: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

All: The Spirit of the Father,
who raised Christ Jesus from the dead, gives life to the people of God. Alleluia.

Scripture: Matthew 12.22–32

22 Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute; and he cured him, so that the one who had been mute could speak and see. 23 All the crowds were amazed and said, Can this be the Son of David?’ 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons. 25 He knew what they were thinking and said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? 27 If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you. 29 Or how can one enter a strong mans house and plunder his property, without first tying up the strong man? Then indeed the house can be plundered. 30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31 Therefore I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Following the reading, Silence is kept.

When you send forth your Spirit, we are created;

you renew the face of the earth.

All:When you send forth your Spirit, we are created; you renew the face of the earth.

O Lord, how manifold are your works;

in wisdom you have made them all.

All: You renew the face of the earth.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit.

All: When you send forth your Spirit, we are created; you renew the face of the earth.

From Psalm 104

Gospel Canticle

The Magnificat (The Song of Mary)

All: How excellent is your name in all the world,
you have set your glory above the heavens. Alleluia.

1.   My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour; he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.

2.   From this day all generations will call me blessed; the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his name.

3.   He has mercy on those who fear him, from generation to generation.

4.   He has shown strength with his arm
and has scattered the proud in their conceit,

5.   Casting down the mighty from their thrones and lifting up the lowly.

6.   He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.

7.   He has come to the aid of his servant Israel, to remember his promise of mercy,

8.   The promise made to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children for ever.

Luke 1.46-55

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

All: How excellent is your name in all the world,
you have set your glory above the heavens. Alleluia.

Prayers

Pray for God to be known throughout our community:

    That our community spaces (The Village Hall; MUGA; playgrounds; Sports facilities) be places that reflect God’s way of living;

    That there is always abundant care for those who need it - and that care reflects Jesus’ example;

    That the members of the Parish Council are guided by the Holy Spirit to ensure that Brockenhurst remains a loving, caring community;

    That visitors continue to find Brockenhurst a glimpse of heaven on earth - and that they might be drawn towards your Kingdom through their experience.

When the leader says, “Lord, hear us.”, please respond:

All Lord, graciously hear us.

Collect

O God the King of glory,
you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ
with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven:
we beseech you, leave us not comfortless,
but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us
and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All: Amen.

The Lords Prayer is said

Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

The Conclusion

May the Spirit kindle in us the fire of God’s love.

All: Amen.

Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia.

All: Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.
