Vicar's Letter - April 2020

Brockenhurst Parish and the Coronavirus

With the UK moving from the ‘containment’ phase to the ‘delay’ phase of its response to the Coronavirus outbreak please find below some guidelines based on central church and Government advice as to how we can try to keep others and ourselves as protected as possible against the virus – particularly those most vulnerable.

The Archbishops have asked, in-line with Government policy, to suspend all public services - which means that there will be no Sunday or mid-week services at St Saviour’s and St Nicholas’.  Weddings and funerals are still permitted but with severely limited numbers in attendance – do contact the Church Office for more information.  Both churches will be open for quiet prayers throughout the day and a daily pattern of Morning and Evening Prayer will be said.  Again, please do contact the Church Office if you would like anyone included in these daily prayers.

All of us should ensure that our hands are washed often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If water and soap are not available then an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol should be used. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. If you feel unwell, stay at home for 7 days. If you live with others they need to stay at home for 14 days from the date of you symptoms became evident. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin.  For more detailed information on what to do please visit

As a church and wider community we are committed to care for all who should need it during this Coronavirus outbreak – especially those who are elderly or vulnerable.  If you have to self-isolate, we can arrange for shopping to be dropped off at your door, and/or someone to keep in contact with you by telephone, in order to maintain a social link and to offer reassurance. Do please contact:-

Simon Newham (Vicar) 624163

COULD YOU HELP SOMEONE? - could you do some shopping & put it on the doorsteps of the elderly/vulnerable, or phone someone for a chat to offer reassurance if they are self-isolating? If so then do please contact the Church Office to ‘sign up’ – the response so far has been amazing!  Thank you so much to all of you who have volunteered to help.

This is a fast-moving and changing situation – the latest ‘news’ on how we hope to respond can be found on the Brockenhurst Parish website (which will also sign post you to other useful sources of information) or by ringing the Church Office on the number above.

And finally for our prayers – Peter Greig (the founder of the 24/7 prayer movement) has put together an excellent ‘Prayers for Coronavirus’ resource at  It includes:

Jehovah Shalom, Lord of Peace, we remember those living in Coronavirus hotspots and those currently in isolation.  May they know your presence in their isolation, your peace in their turmoil and your patience in their waiting.

Please do visit it and pray!

Yours in Christ
